How to Play Survive Deep in the Woods

A beginner's guide to Survive Deep in the Woods: what Farmers and the Beast do, the first-minute moves that matter, and every way a round can be won.

Survive Deep in the Woods is a round-based Roblox survival game from Simple and Fiya Games where "something in the cage is waking up." Every match splits the lobby into two sides: a majority of Farmers, who chop trees, build and defend a base, and try to survive until morning, and a small Beast side that hunts every Farmer before sunrise.

The quick version of your first round:

  • If you're a Farmer: follow the tutorial — gather 10 wood, place a chicken farm that produces gold on its own, then get a shelter and fences up before dark.
  • If you're the Beast: you're released after a short countdown at round start. Hunt immediately, before farmers stack defenses.
  • How you win: Farmers win if the Beast dies or they survive until sunrise. The Beast wins by catching every Farmer first.

The two sides in every match

The official description draws the line clearly. Farmers chop trees, build and defend a base, collect resources, and survive until morning. The Beast hunts down every Farmer before sunrise and leaves no one standing. The loop is summed up as "Build. Survive. Hunt. Repeat."

You queue in from a lobby that shows a shop (cases, amber, and passes), an inventory that starts you with an axe and a simple sword, achievements that pay amber and XP, and a classes screen with farmer-side options: farmer, squad, survivor, builder, prospector, and lookout. Press play and the server queues while it waits for players — the class differences are covered separately in our guide to all classes.

Recorded matches don't show a role-pick screen. The game announces your side at round start — one recording's commentary notes the game "tells you your beast," including whether there are one or two — and holds the Beast behind a release countdown, about 20 seconds in one recorded round. Exactly how the game decides who plays the Beast isn't documented, so be ready to play either role and watch your round-start announcement.

Your first round as a Farmer

Most players land here, and the in-game tutorial walks you through the opening. Follow it in this order:

  1. Chop wood first. The tutorial's first target is 10 wood, and wood feeds every important early structure. Our wood-gathering guide covers the details.
  2. Place the chicken farm. It's the tutorial's first build, and it produces gold by itself — the start of your economy.
  3. Pick one base spot and commit. Choose a good area right away instead of spreading buildings across the map.
  4. Get a shelter up early, before the Beast starts actively hunting. Nighttime is the most dangerous part of the round, so have at least basic protection before dark.
  5. Fence it in. Once the shelter is placed, put fences around it to control where the Beast can approach from — in recorded matches, quick fences bought real time against an incoming Beast.
  6. Keep the loop going. Chop wood, collect the gold your chickens generate, and reinvest: gold unlocks a workbench, towers, gates, and more farms. Later, save for pig, cow, and bee farms to scale income, then add turrets, ballistas, and land mines.

Two habits keep new farmers alive. First, stay aware while gathering: you can hear the Beast getting close, so look behind you between trees — and if you're caught in the open, the Beast can't climb onto trees. Second, don't build alone if you can help it: teammates working one shared base build faster and get a much safer area. For the full economy and defense playbook, see our Farmer guide.

Your first round as the Beast

Your job is the mirror image: catch everyone before the timer runs out.

  1. Wait out the release countdown, then hunt immediately. Farmers are weakest in the first minutes — once they stack turrets and fences, a developed base cannot be beaten.
  2. Sweep the map zone by zone. Recorded rounds describe four forest zones — two green, plus red and yellow. Start with the zone nearest your release point.
  3. Use your tracking tools. The Beast has 500 health, traps, and can see where footsteps are. A seek ability points toward players with a distance readout — recordings show readings like 300 m, 150 m, and 20 m closing in.
  4. Spend your speed wisely. The speed boost lasts only about 10 seconds, so save it to close the final gap rather than burning it on travel.
  5. Break bases you can't crack. When a base is too strong, tear down its farms, fences, gates, and ballistas to cut off gold income — a broke farmer can't rebuild defenses.
  6. Rest after fights. Health and stamina need to restore before your next push, so back off rather than feeding defenders.

The dedicated Beast tactics — pursuit routes, ability timing, base-cracking order — are covered in our Beast guide.

How a round ends

Two details are worth knowing before they surprise you:

  • Round length varies. One walkthrough cites 15 minutes as the survival target, and another recorded round showed roughly 13 minutes still on the clock mid-round. Watch the countdown rather than assuming a fixed length.
  • One catch may not be enough. Defeated farmers in recorded matches didn't disappear from the counter right away, and one Beast player explains that each farmer effectively has two lives. An earlier version of the official description read "Get caught twice, and you're gone," but that line was removed in a description revision logged 2026-09-26, so the exact catch-to-elimination rule is currently unconfirmed. Practically: as the Beast, don't assume a knocked-down farmer is out; as a Farmer, don't assume one catch ends your round. Recorded play also shows defeated players respawning rather than sitting out.

First-match mistakes to avoid

  • Waiting for nightfall to build. The Beast hunts at night — shelter and fences go up before dark, not after the first chase.
  • Scattering buildings. One committed base spot beats farms and shelters spread across the map.
  • Skipping the chicken farm. Without it you have no gold income, and gold is what unlocks everything better.
  • Chopping with your back turned for minutes at a time. The Beast is audible when close; use the warning to move early.
  • As the Beast, banging on a fortified base late. Hunt the open forest early and use seek; save base-breaking for farms and gates when defenses are up.

A note on controls: recorded playthroughs mention a build menu opened with the P key and the Beast's strike on Q, but these labels come from video commentary rather than an official control list, so treat them as reported. The tutorial prompts and on-screen menus carry you through everything a first round actually requires.

Where to go next

Queue up, play your first round as whichever side the game gives you, then go deeper: the Farmer guide covers economy and team coordination, the Beast guide covers pursuit tactics, and the base building, base defense, and how to survive the night guides take your second round further. If you came looking for codes, one full walkthrough notes the game has none to redeem so far — the codes page tracks that if it changes. Since the game is new and its description has already been revised once, expect rules like round phases and victory conditions to be rechecked after major updates.
