Survive Deep in the Woods Workbench Guide: How to Build and Use It

How to unlock and place the workbench in Survive Deep in the Woods, and what it does: a research station for upgrades that make your base stronger.

In Survive Deep in the Woods, the workbench is a building you construct, not an object hiding somewhere in the forest. It appears as a selectable structure in your base build menu once new buildings unlock — which happens after your shelter, fences and gold-producing chicken farms have your economy moving. Its one documented function is research: the station is there for upgrades that make things stronger. This guide covers how the workbench unlocks, how to place it, and what current gameplay footage does and doesn't show about using it.

How to unlock and place the workbench

The workbench arrives with base progression, not map exploration. The early loop runs: chop trees for wood, build a shelter, ring it with fences, then start chicken farms. Chicken farms pay a steady stream of gold, and that gold is what unlocks more buildings. As your income grows, the expansion lineup adds "things like a workbench, towers, gates, and more farms."

In practice it plays out mid-round: with a shelter and fences up, the game announces that new buildings have just unlocked. Open the build menu and scroll the list — the workbench sits alongside gates, farms, towers and decorations like the flag, scarecrow, fountain and statue. Players reach it the same way across several gameplay recordings: select it and place it down ("Oh, we can build a workbench. Let me place down a workbench"), and the station simply stands at the base. No recording shows a special placement zone, a separate confirmation prompt, or the workbench's own wood or gold price — nor the exact trigger (milestone, gold total or building count) that makes it appear in the menu.

  1. Build a shelter and fences, then start chicken farms so gold starts coming in.
  2. Keep playing until new buildings unlock.
  3. Open the build menu and scroll the list until you find the workbench.
  4. Select it and place it at your base.
  5. When the workbench is standing placed, you're done.

If you're still setting up your first shelter, start with the beginner guide and come back once your farms are earning. Need more wood for all this building? See how to get wood.

What the workbench is for: research and upgrades

The clearest look at the station comes from a player browsing the build list in Indonesian: reaching "Meja kerja" (workbench), he asks what it's for, and the answer is "Penelitian" — research. He sums the station up as being "for upgrade-upgrade" — in other words, a place to make your builds stronger.

So treat the workbench as your base's research station, not a crafting bench. One caution on identity: clips showing a workbench that crafts torches, high walls or a campfire from logs belong to the different experience "survive one week in the woods." That crafting menu is not the workbench in Survive Deep in the Woods.

What available footage never shows is what's inside that research menu. No Survive Deep in the Woods source names the individual upgrade options, what each one consumes, or what each costs, and none shows an upgrade being completed at the station. The quoted labels also pass through auto-generated multilingual transcripts, so the on-screen wording in your client may differ slightly. The reliable part is the station's purpose — upgrades that make things stronger; the itemized option list simply isn't documented yet.

Does the workbench spawn Farmer Workers?

Nothing verified connects the two. One video shows a player placing a workbench and immediately shouting "Farmer one!" three times — with no worker appearing, no action performed at the station, and no explanation of what the shout refers to. An unexplained label isn't a mechanic. The workbench's documented job is research and upgrades, not producing, hiring or managing Farmer Workers. For how the rest of a base fits together, see the base building guide.

Bottom line

Chicken farms first, gold second — then the workbench shows up in the build menu alongside towers and gates. Place it like any other structure and use it for what it's documented to do: upgrades that make your base stronger.
